Mountainsmith Scream 25 Backpack

The Scream 25 pack is part of Mountainsmith’s new Mountainlight series of backpacks. It is the smallest, lightest, and most compressible pack in their line-up and it makes for an excellent daypack.

It has all the basics I look for in a daypack:

  • lightweight – at 440 grams
  • well organized – with a main pouch, a hydration sleeve, and two smaller pockets
  • well designed – durable enough for bushwhacking and relatively waterproof
  • compressible – it packs into itself for easy travelling

It’s frameless design means that you need to stick to carrying less than 20 pounds so it won’t be replacing my heavier duty Arc’teryx Bora 35 as a search or climbing pack. But, for fast, light day hikes it works great. I wish I’d had it with me last year for day hikes like this one up to Rummel Lake.

For more information I’ve written a full review over at Seattle Backpackers Magazine based on some extensive field testing.

How do I drink from this thing?
